(Updated) Server reinstallation + more.
Due to the recent break of the RAID 10 in the server, all virtual machines have taken damaged and cannot be backed up.
Two disks in the RAID 10 with 4 Western Digital Back Edition disk has taken damage, this makes it impossible to do a complete backup of the virtual machines, since every time a bit of IO happens the server crashes.
Monday night/Tuesday morning I will backup the different pages on the web/mail server same as the mail directories this will be done a few seconds before I shut down the server so minimal data will be lost.
I can’t say at this time how long the reinstallation will take, but the web/mail server will have first priority. All in all 6 disks have died in the RAID, so in the new build I’m going with Software RAID instead of Hardware RAID.
The new RAID will be build upon Western Digital RE4 Enterprise disks; I hope these disks can handle a bit more load then the black series.
That’s just a heads up for those who get free hosting on the server. I hope some of you will do manual backup’s and drop me a mail regarding this so I don’t have to worry about those pages/mails.
Update:
Small change of plan, had a talk with a good friend (Tommy F. aka. Hamsteren) and he made me realize that it would be a better option to run VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi) instead of running a hole OS and on top of that VirtualBox.
With this change, we’ve ordered a new hardware RAID controller to be able to run VMware ESXi. This means the reinstalling wont happen until later this week (Week 47).
